<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Welcome back to another year in the South School Art Studio. We are off to a great start already! Artists have been busy drawing, painting and making collages. Be sure to check back periodically for details and examples of student artwork.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Parents, if you haven't already done so, please send in a smock for your child. This will be kept in their classroom and worn when they come to art.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I am looking forward to an exciting year! </span>Megan Kimballhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10175348547638252047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9122339672606035388.post-376054250388541962012-02-14T09:20:00.007-05:002012-02-14T09:44:40.162-05:00Bext Kindergarten Project Ever<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><span style="font-family:arial;">Kindergarten artists have been working on the best project, in my opinion (and theirs), thus far--cardboard scrap people. Students have been learning about creating a figure with a head, arms, torso and legs. We have been talking about how the arms come from the top of the torso, etc. Once they create their little figure out of six cardboard rectangles, they head on over to the art buffet to gather materials to give it a personality. Students have had so much fun with their work, that I had to let them take their figure home right away. </span><span style="font-family:arial;"> I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves on this one.<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR1VnYFYlehOj7O-eMRBxpFFjrT3dnwAIkECRMacJztBgIyzRQBPd2mVLaTa9go_ZqwVYo_0GzmfFdZkLnw5JVHkV-2o1l_3tYWxsjqy4o8bCCsdY6rkvTq5BO6DCI8_pvbTtGBX0dH3W4/s1600/IMG_2825.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; We looked at the work of Piet Mondrian and noticed how his work became increasingly abstract throughout his career. Students noticed that although his later paintings are not representational, he created interesting compositions using shape, line and color. Students worked from this idea when creating their own abstract compositions. Beginning with line, they used small pieces of cardboard to stamp short lines on a large sheet of paper. They were encouraged to create shapes and patterns as they worked, but were told to play with the material and see what happened.</span><br />

We looked at some abstract paintings where the artist selected a color scheme to use. We explored primary color schemes, complementary color schemes and analogous color schemes. Students were not required to choose one specific color scheme, but we discussed how being selective about the colors you choose can work better than just using every single color available. Here are two paintings by Sarah Morris that we looked at. Here, she used a complementary color scheme on the left and an analogous one on the right.</span><br />

They have been exploring how you can use coils to create a unique design for their pottery. We learned about the importance of securely attaching each coil to the previous one. To do this. you "slip and score." Slip is very wet clay. It is almost used as a glue to fuse pieces together. Scoring is another word for making small scratches into the clay. When rough clay is attached to rough clay, it is much stronger than a smooth on smooth connection. Each pot came out great! They are all so different. I will post the finished pieces once they are glazed and fired. </span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Z723lixwz1coUjzNyNZsLTCdsQOzER6CdpD82TuRmtiRce6nQIwWd4x9GI_-y_noICESmZYixpDG0jLqZI4hYZGKgir_6EiBXtU8_EeXqO0mVeO9DCLshYmicY62x0ZD-yr8xU-XGX2K/s1600/IMG_2548.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2Z723lixwz1coUjzNyNZsLTCdsQOzER6CdpD82TuRmtiRce6nQIwWd4x9GI_-y_noICESmZYixpDG0jLqZI4hYZGKgir_6EiBXtU8_EeXqO0mVeO9DCLshYmicY62x0ZD-yr8xU-XGX2K/s400/IMG_2548.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698270474568665938" border="0" /></a>Megan Kimballhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10175348547638252047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9122339672606035388.post-6441751523586598422012-01-13T14:57:00.005-05:002012-01-16T11:37:29.585-05:00First Grade Ceramics<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9dVu2X5ZWcjLHQNwhtUqFrRmZOZvc-rT8GPVOymdsks4tHZNni_ewf4jsBJetY6fI22fibvz5p-nawXf5DxIFGt5tHTGw1VJPDN1ETsUqTH4hTuafUL1yHJwqIeUVByJ5qHH08vJo2GJ9/s1600/IMG_2423.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9dVu2X5ZWcjLHQNwhtUqFrRmZOZvc-rT8GPVOymdsks4tHZNni_ewf4jsBJetY6fI22fibvz5p-nawXf5DxIFGt5tHTGw1VJPDN1ETsUqTH4hTuafUL1yHJwqIeUVByJ5qHH08vJo2GJ9/s400/IMG_2423.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5698269863703359010" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">First grade artists have been exploring ceramics. In social studies, first graders are learning about North America. They will soon be learning about native peoples, specifically the Pueblo. The Pueblo people are native to the southwest. To connect to their social studies unit, we learned about the importance of clay in Pueblo life. Students learned where clay comes from and many of its uses. Pueblo artists are famous for making coil pots.<br /><br />Students learned about how coil pots are created by adding snakes of clay on top of one another to create the sides. Each first grade artist has created a coil pot. These will soon be fired in the kiln, glazed and then fired again. Check back in a month or so for completed coil pots! </span>Megan Kimballhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10175348547638252047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9122339672606035388.post-65459914160244724412011-12-22T09:25:00.007-05:002011-12-22T09:36:58.035-05:00First Grade Jungles<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxQIpha7pUcIsUKu1kyZBlSPfAek4-sPPKA7YpLF0YgdZTgbftVe3W1rkeY3IBfo0ZRmSMbNURLOLaRTgCwgoCQHU4QVHN_XBs8BZG6XKBBb8v9nySYyqYlYu3x4kbwP7HoReAzUBwHdnd/s1600/rousseau.femme-exotique.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 317px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxQIpha7pUcIsUKu1kyZBlSPfAek4-sPPKA7YpLF0YgdZTgbftVe3W1rkeY3IBfo0ZRmSMbNURLOLaRTgCwgoCQHU4QVHN_XBs8BZG6XKBBb8v9nySYyqYlYu3x4kbwP7HoReAzUBwHdnd/s400/rousseau.femme-exotique.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688959197235142450" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">First grade artists have been studying painting. We explored how artists create expressive drawings of people by using certain colors and facial expressions. To begin this project, students created three self portraits. In each one, they were asked to convey a different emotion. We used ebony pencils for these studies and created value by smudging and shading. Students used mirrors and drew from observation, noticing how the lines and features of their face changed with each new expression.<br /><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgny6vMWkhg3Y6Qnc21wQunj4V1roGsergHu5eIetksRl2OpZWS3RwXwYiAeDXUUfZS0Pj9B6VN4neQ_0Ql1XUXbmPyEi440lGE33lbG2sMx9kZu7ZnOppr1HH1adsOlH0tJfy_rGmDgVRh/s1600/IMG_2163.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 256px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgny6vMWkhg3Y6Qnc21wQunj4V1roGsergHu5eIetksRl2OpZWS3RwXwYiAeDXUUfZS0Pj9B6VN4neQ_0Ql1XUXbmPyEi440lGE33lbG2sMx9kZu7ZnOppr1HH1adsOlH0tJfy_rGmDgVRh/s400/IMG_2163.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688952114365522130" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijZCqAkjGlRT1p8OGTQmWOd4WyIfZ17QkV16VtsWqNXfE2wo9E9Wvfhj1pirzQlsSH9vYS0ZKJ5llNKsM7dplFbHC0SXEai1IdgasXAWaAT9FABfjo1DaCd3-kvwZemQLcKZh3SdxgSnxd/s1600/IMG_2208.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijZCqAkjGlRT1p8OGTQmWOd4WyIfZ17QkV16VtsWqNXfE2wo9E9Wvfhj1pirzQlsSH9vYS0ZKJ5llNKsM7dplFbHC0SXEai1IdgasXAWaAT9FABfjo1DaCd3-kvwZemQLcKZh3SdxgSnxd/s400/IMG_2208.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688952780816667122" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLuXYqLEHoCBO7XMjMO6OQA3cspLCD9NC13aiS2kMRRjhXAmYo1eVVdb_xCLzJNAWj9kBvpc-oBuukvGpFHegyfAMJ_2s6RgOA0neCPIT_VoDnHyCRGcfoxxxIG0WXfi7WrYU_Pw5dpshD/s1600/IMG_2207.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLuXYqLEHoCBO7XMjMO6OQA3cspLCD9NC13aiS2kMRRjhXAmYo1eVVdb_xCLzJNAWj9kBvpc-oBuukvGpFHegyfAMJ_2s6RgOA0neCPIT_VoDnHyCRGcfoxxxIG0WXfi7WrYU_Pw5dpshD/s400/IMG_2207.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688952771283686930" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbrUCMm1-O_iJ9V0LNUPWYSuLz2aoi-jSk2xKrXHsnSomYrh11pUUsFc2u31gWPXzKlAOjP1EG_lnHLiT91ITPGN4P-K1Muvab79jaAc4LZBUBNk0fejhd0wld_3_k4M-rddeEiKY1om6K/s1600/IMG_2190.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbrUCMm1-O_iJ9V0LNUPWYSuLz2aoi-jSk2xKrXHsnSomYrh11pUUsFc2u31gWPXzKlAOjP1EG_lnHLiT91ITPGN4P-K1Muvab79jaAc4LZBUBNk0fejhd0wld_3_k4M-rddeEiKY1om6K/s400/IMG_2190.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688952766121763858" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlvlS8nIjnGa75Aw4Ceysq70nrpY8bQ2lUAsbVQ0LDMVw-VNUVaBmKxzFZh-ul-pUMqfIlEcDfzHWDmeXD8zxuI4jyLKxz-7UIeS42XDq7w6JpSo5S0W95OMfZyJpuUJUH3VLZoy_XBcK_/s1600/IMG_2249.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlvlS8nIjnGa75Aw4Ceysq70nrpY8bQ2lUAsbVQ0LDMVw-VNUVaBmKxzFZh-ul-pUMqfIlEcDfzHWDmeXD8zxuI4jyLKxz-7UIeS42XDq7w6JpSo5S0W95OMfZyJpuUJUH3VLZoy_XBcK_/s400/IMG_2249.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688952758214491010" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-vbMFxMB_juQ41_Cj0KtXNCPMupbeWtntDRK1N48Y5w0JPnO6VXrfbwc_jcWa8CgKBD820NZy8aXrLZAMNOeMlfZfQ0FOVYOwu512d3ztFqvue5DpcF-hOQmstdaGFyCp0y426WBEqnNK/s1600/IMG_2166.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-vbMFxMB_juQ41_Cj0KtXNCPMupbeWtntDRK1N48Y5w0JPnO6VXrfbwc_jcWa8CgKBD820NZy8aXrLZAMNOeMlfZfQ0FOVYOwu512d3ztFqvue5DpcF-hOQmstdaGFyCp0y426WBEqnNK/s400/IMG_2166.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5688952752168503554" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Next, we talked about how artists use color to express emotion. We discussed relief sculpture and how height can be built up by layering one piece on top of another. Students were challenged to create a piece of their choice (either representational or abstract). They came up with some really interesting ideas. More importantly, though, they figured out how to make the cardboard work for building. They explored different ways to cut, add texture and attach. All of these skills would be very important in the next part of the unit.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQK1T5iDi3IOuSHd6_DFPM9TpDuzeuQ2rmhmyrLquYVl7iOoMcm25WHb9eq2p5jA-73kIXTkiAveQ_aKMN3gwyB4x5SZZv4q9QXre2pkaDvbMK6td_XmpP01iDMvmhfuJpNgWRnRP4FEUE/s1600/IMG_2079.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQK1T5iDi3IOuSHd6_DFPM9TpDuzeuQ2rmhmyrLquYVl7iOoMcm25WHb9eq2p5jA-73kIXTkiAveQ_aKMN3gwyB4x5SZZv4q9QXre2pkaDvbMK6td_XmpP01iDMvmhfuJpNgWRnRP4FEUE/s400/IMG_2079.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682720972709948594" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3tE5fi4bpTvf08U7sQ72Jc5NzJ5ThOe0vhk9CaKUofpyhRPO0THC3Y7f6p_f-5j5oe3h7HZUQv2B2ZCmMqKiKo65kjTMq34wQY0Y5-_8haw4afFL3mgpaABPl83vrhNrx0EXYlaBYMK5z/s1600/IMG_2045.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3tE5fi4bpTvf08U7sQ72Jc5NzJ5ThOe0vhk9CaKUofpyhRPO0THC3Y7f6p_f-5j5oe3h7HZUQv2B2ZCmMqKiKo65kjTMq34wQY0Y5-_8haw4afFL3mgpaABPl83vrhNrx0EXYlaBYMK5z/s400/IMG_2045.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682720960636086642" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">The next time we met, I shared one of my favorite contemporary artists, AJ Fosik. For this project, we were inspired by the work of Elizabeth Murray. To begin, we learned about organic and geometric shapes. Artists noticed that organic shapes often have curved and irregular sides and geometric shapes are shapes that we recognize (square, triangle, rectangle, etc.). Next, we learned about complementary colors. Complementary colors are across from each other on the colorwheel. When you put two complementary colors next to each other, they become vivid and stand out. Students were asked to create organic shapes out of construction paper. Once they had their shape, they used the complementary color to create patterns on top with collage. Students made a number of shapes using the same pair of complementary colors.<br /><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0o6_uTg9i03HjPFAyKc9tErfpFgUQQu5VBOPimvtEKN07eiit3jeaFJi_ssgHQMQixRSQyy2pAoIItw3YVeuFTOdNbEWz-BdBjYBOBJ6n0Nwv8EMncVQ5jhgXgtZsFHx-yjAz1PQW9i0-/s1600/IMG_1876.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0o6_uTg9i03HjPFAyKc9tErfpFgUQQu5VBOPimvtEKN07eiit3jeaFJi_ssgHQMQixRSQyy2pAoIItw3YVeuFTOdNbEWz-BdBjYBOBJ6n0Nwv8EMncVQ5jhgXgtZsFHx-yjAz1PQW9i0-/s400/IMG_1876.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675587940721608322" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">Next, we looked at the work of Elizabeth Murray. Students noticed how she put many shapes together into one composition. We also noticed that new shapes were created in the space between the colored shapes. This is called negative space. Students took all of their shapes and played with their own composition. They experimented until they made a piece that had interesting positive and negative space. Once they were finished, they glued their shapes to large pieces of paper. </span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0x0t45ey72dNQ1DJ2JhykeBsFzCBO1hQk5xrSy32Dsnh1-0E4HU9reKes6boQxeo2VuSIVcfJ7dkx0I73l-V2kSQS5wUwk5cs5HAPWLqhv16R06ijKIc7tX3B4iD4-akvMNGHyhNo5emn/s1600/IMG_2018.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0x0t45ey72dNQ1DJ2JhykeBsFzCBO1hQk5xrSy32Dsnh1-0E4HU9reKes6boQxeo2VuSIVcfJ7dkx0I73l-V2kSQS5wUwk5cs5HAPWLqhv16R06ijKIc7tX3B4iD4-akvMNGHyhNo5emn/s400/IMG_2018.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675588869386702818" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmtyFM23ZXUd4FTKzBVIWDeQPNDwF_H_8hFV8vU5eydXTFuY93h89JHFkS4sfLhMDCmDQDZiP_aadvTPiZIAkebKaxPz-XJF6OdhUAMMNgKNBwoDjNdw1tgQwiPW4b4-qT7sIOHyuhYkvV/s1600/IMG_2015.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmtyFM23ZXUd4FTKzBVIWDeQPNDwF_H_8hFV8vU5eydXTFuY93h89JHFkS4sfLhMDCmDQDZiP_aadvTPiZIAkebKaxPz-XJF6OdhUAMMNgKNBwoDjNdw1tgQwiPW4b4-qT7sIOHyuhYkvV/s400/IMG_2015.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675588864476406930" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiVUCdagCsgVkyTS65CMHAQPsXiDyf68kncXIomiJLMbZsBrpRcwqX0GcpgAzlezpVoUyt-ZdhN08s6TkHW-mAQ2PBktpHNDzTUhlTRLKWVl3AS7UjGe31f9ZuLGAAzuIan4UtfGIi5z3F/s1600/IMG_2054.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiVUCdagCsgVkyTS65CMHAQPsXiDyf68kncXIomiJLMbZsBrpRcwqX0GcpgAzlezpVoUyt-ZdhN08s6TkHW-mAQ2PBktpHNDzTUhlTRLKWVl3AS7UjGe31f9ZuLGAAzuIan4UtfGIi5z3F/s400/IMG_2054.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5675963034565845890" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Check Digication for more finished pieces in the coming week.</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span>Megan Kimballhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10175348547638252047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9122339672606035388.post-44411844106312922262011-11-09T20:14:00.004-05:002011-11-09T20:21:05.527-05:00From Studio to Classroom<span style="font-family:arial;"><span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">Breaking News! For this seasonally appropriate project, first graders made paintings of pumpkins. They used the primary colors to create secondary colors. They made orange pumpkins, a purple sky and green grass. We talked about how there are many different kinds of greens, purples and oranges depending on how much of each primary color you use.<br /><br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_5uKbC7_cuVqp2rncTySL3NdL3eZQujiwdkf22hdmpmVm3T4LDH6w3QyDb_4iHkFht7koTXdRLeZ0tJhXLza5WPv5WINTClK2bop85AGVygwHs-dmJTtISJZR4M-MiL57_eLq7ovh6C6X/s1600/IMG_1881.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_5uKbC7_cuVqp2rncTySL3NdL3eZQujiwdkf22hdmpmVm3T4LDH6w3QyDb_4iHkFht7koTXdRLeZ0tJhXLza5WPv5WINTClK2bop85AGVygwHs-dmJTtISJZR4M-MiL57_eLq7ovh6C6X/s400/IMG_1881.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671927158229709730" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7kQK1t2PRD2YTpOP90hk9Tyt3FW-ra8NH0WZt2EpD4WrhWSejY6QAqxHvlbwnPAFEZV4o7TqJFM8qZb7ebFXb2LLoMf7kfKBI7HQeOO_FdGN7E8kcAPSw8APfeJIfRrKmFZCz2OfO_Y8a/s1600/IMG_1942.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7kQK1t2PRD2YTpOP90hk9Tyt3FW-ra8NH0WZt2EpD4WrhWSejY6QAqxHvlbwnPAFEZV4o7TqJFM8qZb7ebFXb2LLoMf7kfKBI7HQeOO_FdGN7E8kcAPSw8APfeJIfRrKmFZCz2OfO_Y8a/s400/IMG_1942.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671927163599119218" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">The following class, we discussed outline and pattern. With observational drawing, children learn to really look and to express their interactions with objects. Nancy Smith's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Observation-Drawing-Children-Framework-Teachers/dp/0807736910"><span style="font-style: italic;">Observation Drawing with Children</span></a> is an excellent resource for teachers and parents interested in developing a child's looking and drawing skills.<br /><br />I love the first time we explore looking and drawing in kindergarten. Students are sometimes nervous about getting drawings to look just like their subject, but instead we focus on looking at and including as many details as we can. For our first observational drawing experience, we looked closely at leaves. First, we used our sense of touch to explore a leaf in the mystery box. Students were not told what was inside before this experience, so they had to feel the leaf and share with the class what they noticed with their hands. Next, students looked closely at the shape of the leaf. We also listed all of the details we saw on the leaf--veins, holes, spots, etc. After this long investigation, students were asked to choose one leaf and went back to their table to draw it.<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_KHx3YUrfG62MOYhTvMNIpQYEZ3cEKR32J8M6o90hSa7kYZsTtJemTAxGF-8Ti9fG0E-xHu_wnTorqHoFGLLgxuZVcgghY3PjUFq9XK7mJFyQeDERyJpUa5XzA_y25r15RK5H0UQ1HEM9/s1600/IMG_1822.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_KHx3YUrfG62MOYhTvMNIpQYEZ3cEKR32J8M6o90hSa7kYZsTtJemTAxGF-8Ti9fG0E-xHu_wnTorqHoFGLLgxuZVcgghY3PjUFq9XK7mJFyQeDERyJpUa5XzA_y25r15RK5H0UQ1HEM9/s320/IMG_1822.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666772266792340306" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRAkK7rg4yumPg01qJYBPRqaKBFvdXaH8HYi764972Nt_slsZyPTm8rgqbra0h2pAsl-xKGHVeGZH79z1nDG2G_Slv0RdHhUcBFU_uuGqUFTs37WtzUlAyw1RKpxl-KoN4aeIszBcWES3n/s1600/IMG_1821.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRAkK7rg4yumPg01qJYBPRqaKBFvdXaH8HYi764972Nt_slsZyPTm8rgqbra0h2pAsl-xKGHVeGZH79z1nDG2G_Slv0RdHhUcBFU_uuGqUFTs37WtzUlAyw1RKpxl-KoN4aeIszBcWES3n/s320/IMG_1821.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666772260254068738" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjriX3FIaJiJbT0vNhesM4Viz3GI93COQcmGFxWtbK_t8kWohUJGH-WSPDEO51LQXBkkrFGAKtSF5lgBhQzksPDYYhuaHed0JPSuwDjIhpwtwW536Xs0HLxAk5S1onz9eprp90f4Q0B2q9C/s1600/IMG_1798.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjriX3FIaJiJbT0vNhesM4Viz3GI93COQcmGFxWtbK_t8kWohUJGH-WSPDEO51LQXBkkrFGAKtSF5lgBhQzksPDYYhuaHed0JPSuwDjIhpwtwW536Xs0HLxAk5S1onz9eprp90f4Q0B2q9C/s320/IMG_1798.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666772250543223058" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRTXDMS2o6o2uBg9BKukmaj1kprm7vUMEpwDrp33OAHCEC6elNTA1WKLVhzcQpPnAG4E9YiIs9Wdrnrxeh3ImmT_O1h6fmY-FgyZvZ9isd2LeVpP-vgTCm-UpLg-SgeY4mUd5ZwB5_EwSS/s1600/IMG_1795.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRTXDMS2o6o2uBg9BKukmaj1kprm7vUMEpwDrp33OAHCEC6elNTA1WKLVhzcQpPnAG4E9YiIs9Wdrnrxeh3ImmT_O1h6fmY-FgyZvZ9isd2LeVpP-vgTCm-UpLg-SgeY4mUd5ZwB5_EwSS/s320/IMG_1795.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666772244312132658" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family:arial;">In the same class period (Kindergarten artists work FAST!), we came back to the rug and talked about warm and cool colors. They came out great.<br /><br />Since we worked for so long in black and white, we are jumping right into color explorations. For the first one, students explored color mixing. We focused on how to create a variety of colors using primary and secondary colors. We also discussed previously learned concepts such as tints and shades. Third graders spent a class simply experimenting with color mixing. They created a large painting with as many different colors as they could fit.<br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5MjJf1fA5CbOEzH_AN7sZVxQ3pYpKu-R7QOAq5tu-y-8rNdqN5Jo2Hw0hqS2u8MqsS5Zzea5L6YULG50RLstU8L_Y46uvsXy_0i0fIdpSGvQSp78gOzBAz8TTW3m7qrfoWL6O0duODOT1/s1600/IMG_1760.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5MjJf1fA5CbOEzH_AN7sZVxQ3pYpKu-R7QOAq5tu-y-8rNdqN5Jo2Hw0hqS2u8MqsS5Zzea5L6YULG50RLstU8L_Y46uvsXy_0i0fIdpSGvQSp78gOzBAz8TTW3m7qrfoWL6O0duODOT1/s400/IMG_1760.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666766841704494850" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKGmrJD4RDCi64JhEKB8gtmn6YRZ24OXBtQHrjf2gciW7BXHioLjTDGSwgAHO6rhm60Ip1OUOeefl80I7QznRzIyTtDdSXbQDz4-81K6nhyphenhyphenJ6rlmq33Jir3d1u1qiHliFiYu7RajHtINzc/s1600/IMG_1793.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKGmrJD4RDCi64JhEKB8gtmn6YRZ24OXBtQHrjf2gciW7BXHioLjTDGSwgAHO6rhm60Ip1OUOeefl80I7QznRzIyTtDdSXbQDz4-81K6nhyphenhyphenJ6rlmq33Jir3d1u1qiHliFiYu7RajHtINzc/s400/IMG_1793.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666767000181381394" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family:arial;">The following class, we discussed how we made brown with paint. Next, we looked at examples of art and architecture from New York City. Students looked at how illustrator Melanie Hope Greenberg depicts a city. They immediately connect with his bright colors and playful subject matter. Fourth graders have been working on a painted paper collage project inspired by the work of Wayne Thiebaud.<br /><br />The first class, students had a "painted paper factory." Students created sheets of paper filled with a color and texture to use in the upcoming project. We brushed up on our understanding of color mixing and played with adding texture with brush strokes.<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQJJgqsCJ_BX_8YQvEN6lDy39gB2xSQ_jV-PbIK-1Z4wW9yUTb4NRS9pyhc38YgJmF5PxE8tcHUBwKbUrtaDC08B_YNLZJTT3H2FlGSYfT3AhI9gPb4eECOrmS4DEpzHUI_LRnD1SOnemS/s1600/IMG_1546.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 354px; height: 265px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQJJgqsCJ_BX_8YQvEN6lDy39gB2xSQ_jV-PbIK-1Z4wW9yUTb4NRS9pyhc38YgJmF5PxE8tcHUBwKbUrtaDC08B_YNLZJTT3H2FlGSYfT3AhI9gPb4eECOrmS4DEpzHUI_LRnD1SOnemS/s320/IMG_1546.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664909034508760066" border="0" /></a></div> <span style="font-family:arial;">The following week we looked at many examples of Thiebaud's work. We noticed how his paintings included food and had simple backgrounds. The students thought this was probably because he wanted you to look at the food without getting distracted. We also had a number of ideas about why a person would make pictures of food. Fourth grade artists were then given their assignment-- to create a picture of food with collage using the paper they had created during the previous class. Students were reminded to look for textures and colors that would suit the foods they were depicting.</span><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmbdHS3vhb58oOoZbdx4DCsaHo4sa_Gkf0gCa5NpeGmgcQZ0lhNJPePpCzzB2NUiSGm2DFPd1U_eEDhFFmtwaX_NP_e_2No6tPfQZt2fGoDjPax0CMpqtwMZSUCcGfNt4jVbrFBuc1gMe/s1600/IMG_1568.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmbdHS3vhb58oOoZbdx4DCsaHo4sa_Gkf0gCa5NpeGmgcQZ0lhNJPePpCzzB2NUiSGm2DFPd1U_eEDhFFmtwaX_NP_e_2No6tPfQZt2fGoDjPax0CMpqtwMZSUCcGfNt4jVbrFBuc1gMe/s400/IMG_1568.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664910616477090690" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPZ6QZ8SNfFPM4MxCHhRXqE-1VXKcQz9hllEGZkrbqoja9DSKhFn1A_tE0m2XRG7Waq9BNDMGyabSTQOzd8dg49Z_EwHOdLfog1yQx0dbQcl1ZNEveE2L8UJs2WYyhi6HtQ3WuwpFk6Tr1/s1600/IMG_1713.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPZ6QZ8SNfFPM4MxCHhRXqE-1VXKcQz9hllEGZkrbqoja9DSKhFn1A_tE0m2XRG7Waq9BNDMGyabSTQOzd8dg49Z_EwHOdLfog1yQx0dbQcl1ZNEveE2L8UJs2WYyhi6HtQ3WuwpFk6Tr1/s400/IMG_1713.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664910889990612050" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">The artists had fantastic ideas for foods to create. The primary colors are red, yellow and blue. In kindergarten, we learn that these colors are special because you cannot make them but you can use them to make many other colors. We began by looking at an artist who used the primary colors--<span style="color: rgb(204, 0, 0);">Piet Mondrian</span>. Students noticed that his work was mostly straight lines and rectangles of the primary colors, black and white. To help us remember the primary colors, students created a piece of art inspired by Mondrian.<br /><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk4S1id95H5HSR6O2tL_OQPT1KFQU3BStA8GCYxxYA2aKxCHgOBU0AdgN21jLq1mE1aVWN__GHhzyAZLjyR_Jn0q9Os51-vXhm4Mz_EzKFOdTmrXk22tJrl-LHeYWQpMFJlpzQzeiCMNde/s1600/IMG_1577.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk4S1id95H5HSR6O2tL_OQPT1KFQU3BStA8GCYxxYA2aKxCHgOBU0AdgN21jLq1mE1aVWN__GHhzyAZLjyR_Jn0q9Os51-vXhm4Mz_EzKFOdTmrXk22tJrl-LHeYWQpMFJlpzQzeiCMNde/s400/IMG_1577.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662311430736839330" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNfH2Doj4H-s30YCFSF-YS_T32rjrzkAVVCqufPcMMIu-RQK0PTrw6_u_6QKqOgjuTyFcY8jqOlGKyhmoZzE5cwtfk6L7_O52cej2e7hyphenhyphen0Xn45-JGdujysODo_dYRtJhuOPLmdLanRVjzA/s1600/IMG_1556.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNfH2Doj4H-s30YCFSF-YS_T32rjrzkAVVCqufPcMMIu-RQK0PTrw6_u_6QKqOgjuTyFcY8jqOlGKyhmoZzE5cwtfk6L7_O52cej2e7hyphenhyphen0Xn45-JGdujysODo_dYRtJhuOPLmdLanRVjzA/s400/IMG_1556.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5662311422465105746" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family:arial;">Next, kindergarten artists experimented with color mixing. We read the book<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mouse-Paint-Ellen-Stoll-Walsh/dp/0152002650"> Mouse Paint</a> and noticed how the primary colors can be mixed to make orange, green and purple. The work is coming out beautifully and I will post pictures of the finished drawings as soon as they are done.</span><br /></div></div>Megan Kimballhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10175348547638252047noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9122339672606035388.post-11824171595639604632011-09-29T14:35:00.006-04:002011-09-29T14:50:39.509-04:00The Year So Far: Second Grade<span style="font-family:arial;">Second grade artists have been learning about <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">foreground</span> and <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">background</span>. We have also been brushing up on <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">warm and cool colors</span>. In our first project, students created collages of where they live. The first week, students only used cool colors (blues, purples and greens). We remembered to include the <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">horizon line</span> (where the ground meets the sky) and lots of details.</span><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjajdWl6ojSPXLtYfgQuSSv0TTV_U3-VLwQxLjZJEepm7MNEO-KLU1_F_NWgLGG7vtcYMTclLd8VgahHM9ivbdS8_G5sFKSlZ1dgGEHbPloMPyT61ccLjPLNwv1u0wk6ETMKFFdpwVt4LuG/s1600/IMG_1399.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 366px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjajdWl6ojSPXLtYfgQuSSv0TTV_U3-VLwQxLjZJEepm7MNEO-KLU1_F_NWgLGG7vtcYMTclLd8VgahHM9ivbdS8_G5sFKSlZ1dgGEHbPloMPyT61ccLjPLNwv1u0wk6ETMKFFdpwVt4LuG/s400/IMG_1399.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657852842092263202" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqic_bPLkiQeVgVc1FtMvuNB8sqzpWJKAGnX5WowBhqaU0jk8tKdWi5LrV2IaAx3i2IioqOQbqIj8vFVnUgZdclgWjkZMQ9Kej5TYKOZwz9abMWVWguhA5LqZ2KsHHkwSlJl3yLo1wCq54/s1600/IMG_1396.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 350px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqic_bPLkiQeVgVc1FtMvuNB8sqzpWJKAGnX5WowBhqaU0jk8tKdWi5LrV2IaAx3i2IioqOQbqIj8vFVnUgZdclgWjkZMQ9Kej5TYKOZwz9abMWVWguhA5LqZ2KsHHkwSlJl3yLo1wCq54/s400/IMG_1396.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657852837657858578" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family:arial;">The following class, we discussed foreground and background. We noticed that things in the background are usually smaller and closer to the top of the paper. We also noticed that things in the foreground are bigger, lower to the bottom of the paper and often overlap objects in the background. Students then used only warm colors to create their foreground. This time, we made streets with a variety of modes of transportation. We also discovered that because of the warm and cool <span style="color: rgb(51, 153, 153);">color contrast</span>, the foreground stands out from the background.</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BslOthMYmslHSGK7tb35SlHnYtVbY2GhBLW1g1gU27wKjkNlP04jLdNVqWfJkjYpKBaPlt7xbuD2kt-A-wIc9MpANOG9I9Ks0B9xC9b_U0NJxDcNkNH7KJrkrZRQDuYATuX5iugSg0O-/s1600/IMG_1465.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5BslOthMYmslHSGK7tb35SlHnYtVbY2GhBLW1g1gU27wKjkNlP04jLdNVqWfJkjYpKBaPlt7xbuD2kt-A-wIc9MpANOG9I9Ks0B9xC9b_U0NJxDcNkNH7KJrkrZRQDuYATuX5iugSg0O-/s320/IMG_1465.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657854842799749906" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitmfqx_XH_oPu-iW702FStKE34FnUkTdSbSKisZEWfHUmEp2qYsPrbPgkS4RMenDeGPP_2DXc26QQ8mVGqQpl0A1qSMKt4VagiVhRZRyUHQmYwuk_883wtOtG08SbYcLqyeAElFM1GDeKk/s1600/IMG_1469.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitmfqx_XH_oPu-iW702FStKE34FnUkTdSbSKisZEWfHUmEp2qYsPrbPgkS4RMenDeGPP_2DXc26QQ8mVGqQpl0A1qSMKt4VagiVhRZRyUHQmYwuk_883wtOtG08SbYcLqyeAElFM1GDeKk/s320/IMG_1469.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657854844007218034" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTYwqdw4EIFhFB0aakQ0YjG9d-hZrm5pwOI11rlZF_tpGQuWds9jX2cvv2db_lUQpkSQSIHyXQ-NNlts0NYlC2nmhLKDxsu89zyBBDYh2tyTMO9m_rwVjJraLQf17kEEUTSGyRsa_RGXUj/s1600/IMG_1472.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 354px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTYwqdw4EIFhFB0aakQ0YjG9d-hZrm5pwOI11rlZF_tpGQuWds9jX2cvv2db_lUQpkSQSIHyXQ-NNlts0NYlC2nmhLKDxsu89zyBBDYh2tyTMO9m_rwVjJraLQf17kEEUTSGyRsa_RGXUj/s400/IMG_1472.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657855322994940818" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">These will soon be on display at South.
